watching demos on linux is possible :)

category: general [glöplog]
I don't know if anyone else has tried, but if you use winex, it will run just about every windows demo there is! I had been messing with vanilla wine, and I got 40% of them to run, but with winex, I'd say 75% work perfectly. Even the directx ones.

yes, 75% comes frighteningly close to 100%

i'd say there's only 25% left
What D3D8 demos/intros do you get to work in WineX? I've gotten exactly one to work -- FR-08 (and it's _software rendered_ -- WineX can't handle to do it in hardware)...

Lots of OpenGL stuff works perfectly, though. :-)

software rendered fr-08? ugh.

i think i don't wanna see that :)

native code works as well :)
do your demo in native linux code...

better idea :
release the sourcecode with your demo so that a port can be done :)
OR
get a linux freak in your team to port the demo to linux (if you dan't wanna release the sourcecode)

flure> get a grip.

linux.sucks.
gates.are.hot.

penguins are getting really old, imo.. shoot them =)

it's quite ridiculous to assimilate linux to penguins

by the way, nobody forces you to like linux, i just pointed out that if some group want their demos to be watchable under linux, then it's _easy_ to do so

and i still think linux is sexier than windows :-Þ

Here's a novel idea:
Watch Windows-demos in Windows! I tried a few, and they all seem to work...

otoh, watching linux-demos in windows...
added on the 2002-07-08 20:04:12 by _-_-__ _-_-__
scali: I tried a lot of them, and most of them seemed to crash right away. Might have something to do that the Windows box has no 3D accelerator ;-)

Or get a CPC and shut up!!!

ryg: It's actually viewable on my Athlon XP 1700+ :-P (The problem appears to be lack of render-to-texture support in nVidia's Linux drivers, thus the fallback to software... funny, though, I didn't know there was render-to-texture in fr-08...)
added on the 2002-07-09 00:15:09 by Sesse Sesse
Sesse> there actually IS render-to-texture in hardware under linux, at least there is on my old crappy TNT2, don't know how old were the drivers you used by the way ...

the_one_who_has_no_nickname> most linux demos are viewable under linux, for one simple reason : linux coders usually port their own demos to windows or make the source open to everyone, just check Skal's demos to be sure ...
added on the 2002-07-09 09:58:10 by flure flure
of course above i wanted to say "most linux demos are viewable under windows" instead of "most linux demos are viewable under linux" ...

To be honest, I've not seen a Linux demo worth watching yet...
So I don't see why you would even want to go to Linux, and use a buggy emulator and flaky drivers, hoping that you can watch some Windows demos...?
added on the 2002-07-09 11:44:32 by Scali Scali
no linux demo worth worth watching ????
you'd better check one more time ...
did you hear about State Of Mind, Groovy, Hard Rox ?
i know i always have the same references, but anyway you can't say no linux demo is worth watching when there are those ones !
added on the 2002-07-09 12:01:30 by flure flure
I've seen State Of Mind, didn't like it personally...
Didn't consider it a Linux demo... as I saw it on Windows... and there was a DOS version too.

Haven't seen Groovy and Hard Rox...
But apparently they're old, software-rendered, and also available for DOS... probably nothing I haven't seen before.

So I still don't see a reason to go Linux, even if they would be worth watching, sorry.
added on the 2002-07-09 12:11:29 by Scali Scali
nobody tells you to switch to linux by the way

just that there are demos under linux, and they're watchable under windows
as well as there are demos under windows, and they're watchable under linux

by the way, why say "linux demo" and "windows demo" ? it's all the same ! same machine, same hardware ... there's no difference that could make you like one or another demo ...

now if you don't like linux, it's just your taste, but that has nothing to do with "linux demos"
added on the 2002-07-09 12:17:11 by flure flure
I merely noted that I didn't find any demos worth watching on Linux. Especially none that I couldn't watch elsewhere either, in DOS or Windows, without any loss of quality.
Unlike Windows demos on Linux.

I agree, that theoretically there could be good Linux demos, same machine same hardware... However, I've not seen them yet.
Actually, if you want to continue this 'same same' thing, you'll be disappointed... Windows has better support for hardware, and Windows offers Direct3D, which is simply more up-to-date than OGL (on Windows, knowing Linux, it's probably lagging behind even more, with perhaps the exception of nVidia... Do I hear specularity maps?).
So yes, there IS a difference.
And no, as usual, limits do not determine the quality of a demo. There's some great C64, Amiga and DOS demos... So yes, there could be great Linux demos.

However, again, I've not seen them yet... and if they were to arrive, chances are they will be watchable on Windows aswell.
Which still leaves me puzzled as to why people would go Linux for demos.

People go to any platform for demos because they like it somehow, because they are masochists, because they feel reacting to the common tendencies. Who cares? Use what you like and try to be open minded. Listen to what people say about other platforms, try them yourself and choose what you like better.

And don't dis anyone. I am a happy windows user, but I everyday I get more and more the feeling that I will end up with linux (or something else) with the practices Micro$oft seems to be following recently.
added on the 2002-07-09 13:44:33 by moT moT
Well yes, everyone is free to use their platform of choice...
I was just interested in the reasons, as I don't understand why one would choose Linux as a demoplatform... I do know some reasons why I wouldn't choose it as a platform, however...
Besides, the point was running Windows demos on Linux... and what point is that? :)

I don't think I'll ever use Linux myself. At the moment, I like Windows and FreeBSD. I had nothing but bad experiences with Linux myself.
