@Saga: Well listening to a mod isn't fair outside a tracker, and listening to an mp3 isn't really fair outside a mp3-player. When doing A/B-comparisions, you have to use the same software. It is no use comparing audio-output out of for Renoise for example with Winamp.

I guess it would be possible to load the mp3 in the tracker though. If it was a fullblown xrns and I had all the VSTs that might be fair. I used the 'Magic AB'-vst a lot when mastering tracks in Renoise. Comparing it to various genres and seeing the signal changes in Ozone really worked wonders.

@xrs:oh, my bad. If that is the case I'll do a search for the mp3, I only spotted .mods on first glance. I'll have a look!

I wasn't completely kidding with the MOD remark. Many tracker mods, even 4-channel ones, could use some balancing of tracks and frequencies. Maybe it's more like mixing than mastering. But for example, removing things that would play incorrectly in some players, feels like "mastering" department. Isn't mastering about making the product as enjoyable as possible on as wide a range of end-user equipment and situations as possible.

numtek: I don't get the different (especially if the tracker's engine is also available as an input plugin for your favourite media player), but okay...

Anyway, this will never get you the best ever sound if your mixing is average. Actually, in some cases, you can manage to impress people with a non-mastered track if your mixing is state-o-the-art.

We all know the way to achieve _perfection_ is to use sample cds and presets… downloadable from audio torrent forums.

Saves up days of researches and equalizing… because our talent can't be delayed.

I heard Vengenace sample CDs are the best, because they already have the MP3 compression artefacts in the samples you don't have to add them by yourself!
