What would be the Killer Demo Effect?
category: general [glöplog]
The demo actually working on *any* soundtrack.
F**k demo-scripting to a predefined mp3....

fast 3d volxels were my almost-fullfiled dream.. until kalmsen hacked them for the bp05 demo!!! btw where was this scene history presentation done??? do you have any video???
FAG will deliver a killer effecet at bzm. it's called homokaasu.
As hardware has gotten faster, demos feature effects from the computer graphics-world e.g. simulation of natural phenomenae like light/shadow/water etc. This is all well, but these kinds of rendereing techniques should be used as design-tools, not as effects in themselves.
I genuinely believe it is a bad thing that the world of demos and the academic world of computer graphics are converging to the point where you no longer can distinguish between a demo fra the ATI web page and for example the winner of breakpoint.
A killer effect _for a demo_ would be something that is either ahead of current research in computer graphics or, preferably, something which you will never find in academic literature.
I really can not understand those who value design more than effects. Good design is required for an effect to look good, but without any sustance it is worhtless in my opinion.

good luck :D
good luck :D
winden > which bp05 demo ?
@winden: That is the benefit of the c64 scene, i don't think research is bothering much about those old computers and their capabilities anymore :-) As so often a point that arises more and more in the pc demoscene. Where are the limits we can push? And what is the result of missing limits? More design? More fun? On the other hand, do we really need to compete against big vendors and research? Or where we just pushed on that due to recent seminars at parties?
Anyway, as for research i can say that things often are described more brilliant than they are in real :-)

Of course.... how easy. Believe me :-)
for instance ?
see page 1.
I'm thinking that the effect wouldnt have to necessarily be graphical, but maybe something like wind, which you could see moving stuff around, and also hear the blowing and the sound of stuff getting blown by the wind. The product had some whooshing sounds in that little rotating scene but they just seemed like they were part of the background music. But if we could have mind blowing sound effects that almost sounded as if the stuff on the screen was causing them, I think that would be really cool.
Maybe like a scene with a bunch of different sized bottles getting blown on, and the sound being determined by the actual dimmensions of the thing rather then being a part of the music.
There are alot of things that hevent been done yet to look forward to I think, I mean, lotsa plants and things still look really fake, objects dont really interact with each other the way they should in some ways, Not sure if any of those things would make for a killer effect though

Can i DL this seminar anywhere?

(...) We worked with Alex (...)... We haven't got any plans to work with anybody else, and the stuff that we did with him couldn't be realtime. We can't work on that level -- the technology is nowhere near. We wanted to produce something that was high quality, and we figured that that meant sacrifices, not being able to take it out there and do it with a VJ. Because we took a non-realtime approach we let him be an animator, effectively, and he's come out with something that we consider is better. There's shitloads of kids using computers to do realtime in terms of graphics, and I can see exactly what they're doing -- I even build my own little video apps in my spare time, and I'm not an amateur either. I don't know, a lot of what I see to me seems pretty weak.
haha oh yeah, autechre dissing the demoscene :)
well, unfortunately i can't really disagree with what he's saying

But then again, if it was fun to make, doesn't that fulfill its purpose?
Homicide would be a killer effect. Maybe somebody can try it in realtime at some demoparty somewhere?
A vectorgoth would probably be a really miserable selfkiller effect
Traction will feature goths soon, but whether they're going to be vectors, that's an open question. Anyone want to model a vectorgoth for us? :)
Moppi's Assembly04 effect in 3D \o/
@Guardian: ocean machine/tbl at the amiga demo competition
@bitbreaker: that's why I still look upon c64 and amiga coders for inspiration (and also atari ones after seeing things like numen/taquart), even if I'm now coding (at a much slower pace) with softrender on macintosh.
winden & orb: Sadly, I don't think the seminar was recorded. The title was Demo or Die and the seminar was given at our university in Linkoping, Sweden.

we won't know until someone invents pølsespace
man, i'm getting un-gothified. just my luck, when it goes into style i get tired of it all.. ;)
