The Gathering versus Mekka Symposium
category: general [glöplog]
Bombe: ;-DD No chance to get me there, man! ;-D
I won't tell too much for the moment..as there is still a LOT to discuss and clear up...
But I can say for now that there might be the chance of something NEW and surely MUCH BETTER event again for the time between x-mas and new year...
I'm trying to get people (also some of the _real_ scene-orgas of 'ex'-TP) together to discuss various possibilities and circumstances this 'new thing' should meet to be attractive to sceners then...
So be sure that I'll try my best to lead it into the right direction to finally have a nice SCENE event again for that time-gap at the end of a year...
More info will be published from me when it's settled and useful to be spread then... ;-)
So please keep down the 'rumours' for the moment a bit... :-)

Gloom: I don't get the inital problem anyway...TG and MS have been overlapping nearly every year in the first place. =)
Oh well...Good luck with trying to get TG back on it's scene feet, but I'm not really up to spending 40 hours on travelling to TG only to find out it sucks AGAIN.

support the young talents like PHAT - this year it will take place for the fifth time and maybe a little bit bigger support from sceners will let us realize things we have in mind (this year we couldnt manage everything..)
autumn is a beautiful time in Egypt

Not all gamers are as "die-hard" as you think.
A lot of them do various things with their computers, but fall back to gaming on parties because "it's what everyone else does".
*Those* people can be changed.
Of course, in order to do that they would need to actually _discover_ the scene, and that's pretty hard to do when you never meet any sceners nor see any demos, right?
And why tell people it is too hard before they even start?
Babies start crawling and walking before they run, don't they? And they still get pretty good at running I'd say.
If you judge everyone in advance it is not very easy to make them respect or listen to you, is it?
Well, that's my opinion anyway. Flame me if you like, but I doubt that would do anyone any good.

Shifter: "TG and MS have been overlapping nearly every year in the first place."
- ehm, that is totally wrong i might say.
By the way, TG has hold the party in Easter almost every year since 92..

ok, so it's one more guy standing up for the norwegian scene (please don't flame :)
after tg01, which was as mentioned earlier a low-quality party releasewise (but great spiritwise), there has been an enormously positive growth in the norwegian pc-scene, both regardig "new" groups/sceners and old sceners that has regained interest in the scene, and taken care of new wannabes. For the norwegian pc-scene, TG is still the biggest event of the year, and there is still a quite large bit of prestige in winning the pcdemo-compo there.
the norwegian scene is rising again, and the people who were around when norwegian amiga-sceners kicked ass should recognize what this means ;)
Speaking for myself, Mekka isn't really that important to me, as I don't see any recruiting grounds there, and as it seems to me as kind of a closed community (referring to the "you're not going to mekka, you suck"-statements being made in this thread). I'm tired of the elitist thinking of the self-acclaimed "spokesmen of the demoscene", and I honestly do believe that I will be better off at TG, knowing more people there, and being recognized as a scener, not just an unimportant wannabe.
a short thing about gamers:
they are all impressed by productions like fr-08 (dubbed 'boring flybys'), because of the slick 3d-engines and small sized code. They are not uninterested in the scene, just uninformed. throwing them out of parties (as some idiot suggested earlier on) will not contribute to converting them, rather fire up under the stupid "gamers vs sceners"-war.
and oh yeah.. the first sceners were gamers wanting to copy copyprotected games. cracktros anyone?
so don't discard the gamers. at least they like watching smooth 3d-engines, and so do many of us.
anyways, I'm drunk, so before I get tempted to become personal on some the, in my opinion, less socially gifted people here:
good night, and have a nice easter, no matter where you are going.

it's not about throwing people out of party, it's about organizing and participating in parties the way we see them.. you want to be a proselyte, other want to have fun, simple as that.
/me would prefer a lot of small sized events in clubs and bars than a couple of huge ones in stadiums.

the experiences i had so far with showing gamers demos were rather disappointing. i'm co-organizing a local lanparty (heh, not what you think, i don't play cs, just setting up a classic area with c64s and amigas for the guys to play on :), and the last few times i was always showing amiga & c64 demos, trying to recruit someone. but it's really hard, those demos don't seem to impress them much (except for lapsuus). but this time i'll bring my pc and let it run demos all the time, with the screen right next to the entrance. maybe that'll help :)
Activator: "- ehm, that is totally wrong i might say." Pfffwwwhaha! I bow to your omniscient knowledge! =)
Let's do the math on that one: Both TG and MS promote their party to traditionally fall in the Easter period. That may give you a clue. TG has been around long before MS, which first was held in 1997. Before that, there was Symposium and Mekka'(held a week later at the same location as Symposium) and arguably the Blackbox Symposium in 1995.
TG'95: 12-04/16-04 | BS'95: 22-04/23-04
TG'96: 02-04/06-04 | S '96: 05-04/08-04
TG'97: 26-03/30-03 | SM'97: 28-03/31-03
TG'98: 08-04/12-04 | MS'98: 10-04/13-04
TG'99: 31-03/04-04 | MS'99: 02-04/05-04
TG'00: 19-04/23-04 | MS'00: 21-04/24-04
TG'01: 11-04/15-04 | MS'01: 13-04/16-04
Blackbox Symposium '95 was the only one not to overlap with TG, but technically that's not Mekka-Symposium. Granted, that's the only year you might be right about, and only by royal imaginative grace because I'm not 100% sure on the TG'95 date anymore.
Get your facts straight. Your kung-fu ain't no good.

lug00ber: nice words from you! Thanks and 100% ACK from me!
This should be the way to go in future...will help the scene lots more I'm definitely sure!!

Shifter: ok, ok.. im agree with your facts. but just dont let TG be the lamer-gamer party this year. there are sceners and alot of compos there for everyone. it was a big scene-party before, and let's not forget that. It can be better.
Let us try introduce the gamers too the demoscene... Some of them might think its fun and start learn something. Let's be friendly and learn and show'em what is fun. It's fun to be creative and smart.

It's cheaper for danes (and anyone outside norway/sweden/finland) to go to MS instead of TG.
and activator, I'm sorry, but what does TG offer me that MS doesn't? (no, I'm not anti-TG, I'm just trying to understand what people are thinking here.) I don't think sceners will stream back to TG unless they either a) Change their dates or b) OFFER us something. like half the entrance-price and a cool oldskool-area. This is what I think.
stefan:
fresh sceners. new people. new deadlines :)
and we have our demoscene-area already, yes.
("we" as in "the sceners", I'm not in the crew)

Yes, and that we can get at any other big-scale party that is NOT held at the same time as MS (asm, tp, dh).
And about fresh/new sceners. Like they'd get interested in the scene at a large-scaled game-lan.
I got interested because some friends were into the demoscene, not because I was at a lan where someone FORCED me to watch demos. I think this goes for most sceners.

TG is the biggest party, so I dont see why i shouldn't go there and try get the scene back like it was before. Norwegian demoscene deserves that.
stefan:
thanks, thanks, and again thanks.
finally someone else speaks it out, how scene recruiting works.

stefan: changing dates is hardly an option for them. It would be like delaying christmas :)
activator: if you want to do the norwegian scene a favor, go for small-scale parties and abandon the whole TG project. No matter how pure and spirited your motivations are to undo the damage done to TG, it's unlikely to work. Starting out fresh can make a great deal of difference, you know. Oh, and the biggest party is dreamhack. ;)

The way people used to get interested in demos around here, was to see a demo on a BBS and then be curious and download it :) .. then watch it and see that it rocks :) Maybe people should serve demos on warez channels? :)
bigcheese: baaaah :-) like canada ever had a serious demoscene ;-]
I got into demos because I was into programming already at the first Summer Encounter (now known as Scene Event) I decided to do my very first "demo" which was a fast-intro and from there the snowball rolled.
SNOWMOS FOREVER!

macaw: the problem remains, as you so clearly point out above, that tg isn't central enough. m&s in germany is. still, the trip is half the adventure, as the complex-guys used to say each year. :)
yeah we need parties in the geographical center of the scene. north germany, denmark, netherlands or belgium : perfect place to gather people from the north(no,se,fi), the east(pl,ru,hu,sk,cz..), the south (fr,ch,it,es,pt,gr) and center. yeah a quite long trip sometimes, but it's still possible to come to a party there by car.
m&s is at the perfect location and is mostly the last big one reminding there.
tp, wired, takeover don't exist anymore .. (tp still exists but doesn't attract sceners nowadays)
sad ..
now we have to travel a bit more(assembly) and|or to attend smaller parties(scene event, dialogos, buenzli, vip, trsac, alternative party)

stefan:
not "fresh sceners" as in "recruited as this year's tg", but "fresh sceners" as in "we got the interest at last year's tg, this time we want to participate".
that's "fresh sceners" as in "sceners you haven't met before" and as in "sceners that hopefully will carry the legacy further when you quit".

why 'recruit' in a party anyway
