What would be the Killer Demo Effect?

Well, as a nostalgic Amiga fan:
God you pc fucks whine a lot.

you know what the killer demo effect would be? correct shadows in a dynamic scene with an area light source. indirect illumination and caustics are just icing on the cake - shadows are the real meat & potatoes of global illumination. dynamic ambient occlusion is a first good step since the lighting function is simple (some people have done this but it's not quite fast enough for any real scene). PRT looks really nice, but as you've seen in plastic's demos (beautiful as they may be), it's really only good for static geometry.
i agree entirely that demos are more than just technical, but the question of what the killer demo effect is is a technical one. i wouldn't call style, art, or design "effects."

i want to view realtime animations made with the stereogram technik
The game Magic Carpet had a stereogram mode...
Wasn't really playable though :-)
mrtheplague: Then wouldn't it be easier to say that perfect realism in a 3D scene would be the ultimate effect?
sparcus: Yeah, Magic Carpet had a really great software rendering engine. Reflections on the water and all that, and a nifty red-green (or was it red-blue) stereo view mode. It was amazing, at the time. The game was crap, though. :)

sparcus: Magic Carpet had a 3d stereo mode, which is different from stereograms

doom: take a walk.
Yeah, I asked one of the other coders in our group what the Killer Effect would be and his immediate answer was "real-time raytracing" which in essence is perfect realism in a 3D scene.
But as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, the Killer Effect is more likely to be something we have not seen or imagined yet. Historic examples of such Killer Effects could be:
Border free graphics (C64 and Atari ST)
Glenz vectors (Amiga)
But then again, it's hard thinking of what you can't think of ;o).

you guys are soo damn short of imagination.
realtime porn simulation!!1
Guard][an: Magic Carpet had 3 modes between which you could switch by pressing F10: Normal Mode, Stereogram Mode and Stereo 3D mode for which some glasses where enclosed with the game (and unlike doom I loved the game, it's one of the rare games which I still play once in while, but I guess we're getting offtopic here :-)
önsli: I bet that would brighten up your life, wouldn't it?
I am happy that I can inform you that this has already been done. Please take a look here. Bonus points for finding out which wellknown demoscene coder is behind this. (hint: think ms98)

Are you serious Stelthz?
I guess I can have analogue remove it from my account, You really do your homework.

OMFG I'm replying in the wrong F'ing Thread I'm going to bed, Sorry Stelthz Been up for 36 hours
??? ok :)
wow! that sexybots is pathetic and awesome at once! i bet some farbrausch coder is behind this (german, 3 women, candy colors)
i'm impressed!
i'm impressed!
add a 'd' after the '3' or else it sounds stupid. :(
skrebbel: I just did. And I still think realism is boring.
Pick some buzzwords and combine them. It may also help to multiply all the involved numbers by two.
Like this: ULTRA-REALISTIC REALTIME RAYTRACED 6D VECTORCUBES WITH DYNAMIC CONTENT GENERATION AND 128 DYCP SPRITES AT 100 FPS USING DIRECTX 18.0 PIXEL SHADERS

Stelthz: i wasn't really serious. btw. that coder is also member of haujobb. digisnap, right? btw. stelthz: SUCK MY GIGERIAN PENIS IMPLANT.
but still i think it would be killer demo effect if there was like REALLY _real porn simulation_ ;D
STYLE and ORIGINALITY would be a killer demo effect... sometimes it will happen.
Stupid question! No one would tell it here. Than some1 might ran of with his idea!
I guess people come up with stuff all the time that they can't implement. No harm in sharing an idea you won't benefit from anyway.
Also, I coded an effect once which trashed some memory, then I saved my corrupted sources over the old ones by accident, thus killing a couple of effects. So does a demo effect which kills other demo effects constitute a killer demo effect?

i agree: if you hoard your ideas you have less incentive to create new ones. but if you give them away freely, you'll always have to keep on thinking of new ones. not only will your ideas get better, but your ability to come up with new ones will too.
Of course we should share ideas and discuss future effects. For me this kind of web discussion is a substitute for discussions among sceners on a party. The same issue would come up if you walk around and see what people are coding/drawing/modeling and talk about the bright future of the scene.
The thing I wouldn't share is a Killer Effect I'm coding on right now and plan to release in the near future.
