Animations with diagonal lines in the H.264 video codec

category: gfx [glöplog]

The H.264 video codec (used for example by YouTube) is particularly good at storing diagonal lines/stripes that have certain angles, for example 45 degrees. The technology is called "intra prediction mode".

How much file size can be saved by restricting lines in animations to these angles, as opposed to other angles?

(Bonus questions: Does this work only for image patches whose coordinates are multiples of 8 or so? Are there other tricks to design animations such they look good even with small file size, for example patterns that repeat at certain specific locations?)
