Amiga old-timers: Dance in Cyberspace visuals stolen, or used with permission?
category: general [glöplog]
Was dumping a laserdisc and could immediately see visuals of various 1989-1991 Amiga demos onscreen from Razor 1911, Phenomena, Scoopex, etc. Was about to throw a major (decades-old time-delayed) hissy fit until I saw the end credits, where the various groups were credited.
Credited != "used with permission". Do any Amiga old-timers remember if these visuals were used with permission, or were they just stolen and then credited?
For the curious, here's a (low-quality) version of the video in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag3vkQmzwS8

I like the tracks, and there are obvious Amiga demo effects going on there, genlocked with high-end professional CGI in a unique blend, but yes, it does make you hope those effects were used with permission.
I remember an article in an issue of Grapevine (I forget which one) talking about this, so it was definitely a thing at the time.
I could swear that I've seen some "Kefratraz-bars" in one of the old X-Mix videos.
Interesting..
The music at 3:52 even sounds a bit inspired by demotunes from that time.

I wouldn't assume it was stolen by default but I could imagine a situation where trying to locate the original artists / sceners would have been difficult pre-internet, plus I imagine someone may have assumed the productions were "public domain" - I only say that as a (ahem) younger scener (at the age of 40) who saw some demos being sold for £4 in shops alongside various PD disks.
Trixter: Any plans on putting that dump of the LD onto archive.org?

Probably rather the other way around.
I was contacted at the time by the company that were producing the video for Dance In Cyberspace.
I provided a few bits and pieces for them to use (I think it was some individual parts from various demos I'd done... Madness etc...), and I did get paid for it (not much though if my memory serves me right), although I didn't get credited at the end of the video (perhaps they only credited for the footage that they were unable to obtain permission for?)

Just remembered that I have the 12" of the music for this vid somewhere. And also that "Dr. Devious" in this case is an alias of Guru Josh.

Not until a particular archive.org situation changes. Also, I'm "only" dumping laserdiscs analog raw YUV 10-bit -- I'm not using a domesday duplicator, and the last time I posted a laserdisc dump that wasn't 120G of RF data I got pestered by domesday fanatics and would prefer not to this time around.
There are many VHS dumps floating around; it's not rare.

This is great info, thanks! I like your suggestion that they only credited (EXPOSURE!!11!) the artists they couldn't get a hold of, as if that would make it ok. So, good to know that they at least tried.
