Some parties hold "fast demo competitions" where the entries are made at the partyplace, usually with a given theme to capture the party-atmosphere - example.

Typically you get 4 or 8 hours, and you get a theme or N elements that need to be included to guarantee you don't make, or at least finish, the demo before the party. (Of course, nothing keeps you from making an engine or setting up your development environment or making effects or becoming a proficient coder before the party. It strongly varies how much pre-party preparation is involved.)
