Call for Participation: Marginalised Pioneers in Creative Computing

category: general [glöplog]

Echtzeit - Digitale Kultur is launching a new collaboration project: We want to uncover the stories and biographies of women and minorities in creative computing and digital grassroots movements all across Europe!

For this, we have started an open Call for Participation, the application deadline is April 17th:

https://www.echtzeitkultur.org/en/2025/make-them-scene-en/

And thanks to the GRADE programme, you can even receive compensation for expenses that occur in your research.
Most information should be available under the link, feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions or could use some help with the application.

Also: if you can't answer the call yourself but would have some great recommendations about applicable "hidden figures", feel free to post them.
It might help someone who would like to participate, but doesn't immediately have someone in mind.

Please define what counts as a "minority", and who is considered a "woman".

From the text:
Quote:
By “culturally marginalised”, we especially refer to people who – given how society perceives them – had a harder time to have their work recognised and their voices heard, in tech and society at large.

This includes (but is not limited to) creators, organisers and problem solvers who are cis-female, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, had their access limited due to financial or educational factors, age, displacement (refugees, Romani/travelling peoples), country of origin (e.g. embargoed or war-struck states, oversea colonial territories), disability or more.

Marginalisation is a moving goal post and can change over time, changing attitudes, age, financial means, education etc. So yes, as the abstract should contain a brief rationale why this person may have likely been overlooked.
I'm actually curious myself, as the quote above by far does not contain every aspect of why people have a harder time asserting themselves in creative computing, and it would be interesting to learn more.

This is not a political discussion, but a pragmatic one - we know there have been great people out there who found a refuge from those factors and recognition especially in online spaces and digital subcultures.

But we only know about the ones... we, well, know about.

Hence the open call for participation especially amongst us demosceners and similar subcultures, to give an opportunity to record the stories of weed whackers, role models and people from all walks of life.

I was trying to point out is that a "minority" is also a very ambiguous term. For example, are Serbian or German people a minority? They are in Hungary, and they're officially recognized as such. Are they a minority in Serbia and Germany though? If they aren't minorities, then who is? The Roma? They are also recognized as such, but they're far more populous in Hungary or Romania than either Serbs or Germans.

As for what is considered a "woman", it's a serious question, and I'm not the only one asking it. I have a definition, but it may be outdated.

On the other hand, is there any purpose for this project than to vacuous virtue signaling? I am aware of several women and minorities who achieved great success in digital arts, but none of them ever complained about not getting recognition. I sincerely wonder where would you find some who faced such discrimination, despite producing quality stuff.

Bonus points offered for a civilized answer.

@tomcatmwi

😑 Oh dear. I can see why you are not interested in this topic. But since you're not a woman or part of the target audience, why do you need to comment? What is your contribution here? It's always easier to say "I don't like this and here are my 20 reasons why you're wrong." instead of actually contributing.

Don’t engage with tomcat. He’s not here to have an honest discussion, but to derail this thread. His post is the playbook extreme right gishgallopping, focusing on irrelevant details and straw men and unverified personal experience which is impossible to argue against. Hell just keep posting this kind of shit until everyone is tired and angry. He’ll post very civilized and will immediately jump on any emotional response. It’s not worth it.
