maybe the top10 should be replaced by a recommendations list that shows 5-10 prods randomly picked from a pool of 20-30 (for example). and the prods for the pool would be regularly updated based on the number of thumbs up given in the past 6 months or something like that, which would keep the pool changing according to "current taste".
then there would be no ranking anymore, and prods that were momentarily hip two years ago but have since been forgotten wouldn't show up - sounds like this would fix some of the problems with the current charts.

It feels like the top 10 list suck. ......
You could take ratings from sceners for different demo attributes such as code, graphics, music, design etc and then average them for an overall result. Then display a top x based on these ratings.
Simply viewing a page and downloading a prod doesn’t really vouch for the quality of that prod.
Drop prods that don’t have more than x ratings from users and you might have a more accurate chart that pushes the cream to the top?
One issue is “would someone comment on the quality of a production”?.
Hehehe Somehow I think sceners would.

chaos^fr, actually, intros are more interesting imo. You usually see better shit in intro compos than in demo compos... Kinda. Allthough, variform by kewlers is fucking great :)
Who cares about the top10 anyway? It's a subjective view of the users here, but doesn't necessarily mean the quality of the prods. For example 604 is a kickass demo, but is nowhere near the top10. Kasparov/Squish/Second Reality/Dope/303/<insert your fav. demo here> neither. Not because they're not cool, they just don't get in.
I personally like fr08 better than H7. H7 is a great demo technically, has a nice atmosphere, but fr08 fits my taste better. But I don't care about fr08 being second behind Tube. It happened, so what?
And anyway, if you don't like the state of top10, stop whining and change it by producing a cool prod that fits in.

saffron's idea sounds nice....
I recently watched a TV show on some music channel and I remembered that in those charts, entries are aging. So they only stay for, let's say, 4 weeks, after that, no matter how cool they are, off they go. Would make sense here too.
However, there are so many variations to build a top10, so let's just write demos and intros and other stuff instead so all these whiners get a new idol to bow before >>>:))

the #1 problem with the charts is that popularity influences the rating too much, which is bulllshit, since the only thing that really does is consolidate prods that had good popularity for quite some time (they're in the top10, so people look at them first when they visit the site, so the popularity increases). even worse, even an only mediocre production that is in the database for 3 years has ofcourse a popularity that is far higher than anything you could achieve with even the best demo in the world in a timeframe of one month.
if the rating system really should say like it is, analogue should atleast divide the popularity by the time the prod is added in the database - so a production that gets 100 hits in the first two hours gets a higher rating than a production which got 200 hits in 2 years. should be obvious why this is a lot fairer.
this still involves the popularity and so is still biased towards productions that had a long time in the top10, but atleast it helps new productions get more attention.
on a long-time scale, it would probably make sense to be able to sort the productions by average rating only, but by now, i guess about 80% (if not more) of the demos in the database have less than 3 comments. just sorting by average rating would be quite useless in such a situation.
making the charts system more responsive to new demos is a somewhat controversial issue. after all, the charts ARE meant to be some sort of all-time hit list. having a seperate "last month's top10" would be a good idea however - so one can get see what's up currently. by now, i think there's enough discussion to give a somewhat representable collection of data for such charts.
on chaos' comment: i don't agree that demos aren't really recognized on pouet anymore - yes, demos have somewhat lost a bit of their popularity, but that's also because e.g. intros are getting steadily better, while there has been little change in "average" demos for the last 2 years. polycounts and hardware requirements are slowly going up, but that's about it - it's been a long time since there was a demo that really got big attention (last was VIP2 a think).
what I really think is absolutely underrated on pouet is wild demos - there's no single wild demo in the top10, even though I definitely think e.g. South Party would belong there.
about games, 256b intros and musicdisks in the top10: well... a big amount of sceners probably wants a demo-(4k+) intro top10, i.e. stuff that can still be categorized as a demo (<4k intros are usually just single effects, and musicdisks/games should be kinda out of compo). analogue, probably make a poll on this and change the system accordingly? :)
